Description
A Rare Silver Gilt Amulet Case, Italy, The 18th Century
Dimensions 7.5 x 6 cm
Provenance Estate of the ancient Luzzatto family.
Details Engraved and punched with foliage motifs decoration. Open on bottom part to contain an amuletic inscription.
Condition Good
Notes “The amulet case was itself with magical value over time and decorated with symbols and formulas. It was originally used to contain an amuletic inscription on paper or parchment for a particular petitioner, later replaced by another, as the case was handed from owner to owner. The magical power of the inscribed amulet lay in the number of variants of the Ineffable Name contained in it”. (Chaya Benjamin, The Stieglitz Collection Masterpieces of Jewish Art, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem 1987, p. 392).
