Details
London: William Jackson, 1733. Volume 1 of 7. First English Language Edition. Notable as one of the earliest sympathetic and scholarly treatments of Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and other non-Christian religions. Bernard Picart was one of the most prolific and talented engravers of his age. At a time of widespread anti-Semitism, it offered one of the most sympathetic portraits then available of European Jewry. Its English and Dutch translations, along with an abridgment in German, meant that the book, and especially Picart’s images, became the standard means of portraying many of the world’s religions until well into the 19th century.
Condition
The front cover binding is detached. Otherwise consistent with age, the leaves and maps in generally good condition.
