Biography
Moshe Ephraim Lilien, Illustrator and Print-maker. b. 1874, Galicia. Immigrated 1906 with Boris Schatz. They founded Bezalel, Jerusalem, where he taught for a time. Studies: Academies of Cracow and Vienna. 1895-98 Lived in Munich, illustrated journal ‘Der Jugend’. Participated in Zionist Congresses. In 1901 at the Fifth Zionist Congress he took the now famous photograph of Herzl on the balcony of the Three Kings Hotel, overlooking the Rhine in Basel. He also painted many portraits of Herzl and illustrated the Golden Book of the Keren Kayemet. Died 1925. (The Israel Museum in Jerusalem, Web Site)
